DA Exploded!

Fri Aug 28, 2009, 4:46 PM
I thought DA had exploded when it got to 10 Million photos but I just uploaded a photo and it's now in the 135m mark, it doesn't seem that long ago to me when DA was celebrating the 10 millionth photo although upon looking it would seem that that was about 5 years ago, so maybe I am thinking of some other mile stone. Anyway so you would think that in a wave of more deviations the added amount of users would counteract the drop in exposure your image gets, however that doesn't seem to be the case and as a mention in this thread [link] .
Now I think it's probably because of a wave of point and shoot snappy happy photographers and emo poets flooding the server that makes getting attention on DA quite hard these days.

I'm not sure how anything gets into the daily top faves, I'm not saying I have anything good enough to do that but without photo pools like on Flickr I'm not sure how anything gets noticed after its disappeared off the main page, my theory is that if you get enough faves in those few seconds your image is on the main page you can get into the daily top faves list the rest disappears into obscurity like the image I just uploaded (at time of writing) [link] it got two faves in a few seconds and then bam nothing gone.
I'm sure there are other ways to get attention, going around searching for pics on DA leaving endless amounts of comments hoping to get some back and building up a possy of dedicated subscribers by subscribing to every one and there pet. Well I search for pictures when I want to not to get attention and despite that I still have given way more comments that I have received, maybe it's because I'm rubbish, and I subscribe to people who's work I am really fond of.

Anyway I spend most of my time on Flickr these, that doesn't mean I'm leaving DA, I don't understand people who leave website I hate that it's not like you have to catch a f*cking plane to get back to it it's a f*cking website, I just don't spend the time here I used to, occasionally I will still submit a deviation only for the 5 seconds of glory when I get a few faves before the image falls deep into that abyss.

One more thing to mention I actually registered [link] and I had let it get a bit rusty but one time when I tried to log in I couldn't only to find DA wanted that URL and deleted that account, I thought DA never deleted account well that one went all I can say is you should have go to it before me in the first place rather than deciding you want it later on, and they could have at least have sent me an email.

I'm not sure if anybody reads this it's been so long since any of my journal entries has had a comment i'm not sure if anybody does, so please leave a comment even if it's just to say you have read it:lol:!

My Stuff

Mon Aug 4, 2008, 3:56 PM
I own a lot of equipment I own

Olympus OM-2n
Olympus Om-2
Olympus OM10 x2
Olympus OM40

Olympus MJUII
Olympus Stylus Epic
Olympus MJU
Olympus XA2

Nikon F80
Minolta Dynax 40 (toy)

Canon Canonet QL17
Mamiya ETRS
Polaroid 636

Fuji S5700 (Digi)

Going out onto the street I will Normally take the OM-2n thats my regular use camera these days, the OM-2 is broken all it needs is a new top plate (which I have) but I need to find the time go get the tools and swap them, I may just take it to a repair shop as it not a very expensive job.

I would like to be using the Canonet more for street, but its not very easy to focus with but it is dead quiet, normally I will carry a 50mm 1.8 and a 28mm 2.8 Zuiko lenses with me, I also have a 135mm Hoya lens for the OM system but I don't use it that much. I will normally Carry either the MJUII or the Stylus Epic everywhere, one of them is always in my ruck sack, they are ideal for cycling tiny and very light, the batteries won't self discharge if I don't use it for 2 months. The MJU and the XA2 I tend to use for nights out, a bit like many people would use a disposable camera, only its much better and I don't really need to worry about them getting stolen. Although recently I used the Stylus Epic on a night out and still didn't need to worry about it.

The F80 I bought after I had already been very used to the OM cameras, I had used a modern digital but after being shocked at the array of features on a friends latest Minolta SLR I new I had to get a modern film SLR. It is really good it’s the camera I will often use for street photography cross processed; I also use it for family gatherings etc and also the shoot I did with a model (see my gallery). Its really consistent the view finder almost looks like a bright photo It really helps me to get it right and not waste film, just get the flash right other wise you might end up with a lot of photos that look like this [link] rather than like this [link]

6 Years!

Fri Mar 28, 2008, 2:58 AM
Well I have been a member 6 years now, Can't quite believe its been that long.

I am not currently having much time for photography, well more specifically printing, there is always time to take pictures, but once I get some time, I sure I will get back into the darkroom.

Time for an update

Thu Jan 3, 2008, 4:46 AM
Well it has been a long time since I updated this. Since the last time I wrote in my journal I have finally had a go at darkroom printing, I do it in my bathroom and I have been able to experiment a bit and have had some great results, only problem is that my land lord doesn't like me doing it, so it has to be done on the sly and then I have to completely clean up the bathroom before he gets back. I haven't been taking many photographs recently, well at least not to the extent I used to, when I have been taking photographs its mainly either B&W or cross processing, I bought 10 rolls of AGFA Precisa with the intention of cross processing it, and I have just fallen in love with that film, I will be so gutted when I run out.

Can somone say somthing in my shoutbox?

Fri Mar 16, 2007, 7:50 AM
Its too bare, so why not add some random nonsense.

I have too many cameras these days [link] most of them get used let me explain.

I need 4 OM bodies, then I can have each body loaded with different film, that way I actually get round to using the Ilford Delta 3200, I had had for so long.
At the moment I have one with slide in, another with slide in that I intend to cross process and one with HP5 in, the OM-40 currently isn't loaded. The F80 is for more professional work, where I am reliant on results, also as the auto focus is so good I like to use it wide open, then I can knock things that are a fair distance away out of focus.

The Canonet is for serious street photography, its big but the quiet, so I am looking for something smaller, then I think I can really get into street photography.

The Stylus Epics are carry everywhere cameras, the black one is normally loaded with B&W and the silver with colour.

Lastly the MJU (stylus) I use in night clubs, the XA2 I used to use in night clubs before I got the MJU, so now it suffers from lack of use! And my digital camera I used to take the picture of my gear.
